The cane was once, and still is, a valuable raw material and used by the people Baixo Guadiana, appearing associated with various activities in the territory. Abundant along the main water lines and easy to work, has also this Algarvian sub-region, many uses related to rural activities.
Among the various applications of the cane, the best known is the basketry. From the slats of this plant the basket makers "weave" baskets and baskets with varied shapes, sizes and purposes, such as transportation and storage of bread, nuts, and once, fruit and fish.
