schedule: 09:30 - 19:00 (Summer) and 9:30 - 17:30 (Winter)

Building began on this castle during the reign of King D. Dinis, in the 14th century. Its purpose was to defend the border and control trade along the Guadiana. In the 17th and 18th centuries (during the Restoration Wars), seven cannons were placed here, pointing towards the Spanish village of Sanlúcar de Guadiana. And it also played an important role in the hostilities during the civil war in the 19th century.

In 1992, it was refurbished and subsequently classified as a Building of Public Interest. It currently houses an interesting archaeology museum.
