Inspired by the traditional Castro Marim salt, recognised as being among the best in the world and produced in salt pans that are an integral part of the locality's history, the "House of Salt" opened its doors as multicultural facility. It has hosted a wide range of events, including fado performances, art and painting exhibitions, and themed encounters, to name but a few. Located at the entrance to the town, the venue offers a bar and various displays of salt and salt derivatives produced by a number of local enterprises and a salt cooperative. The enhancement and promotion of salt production and the biodiversity of the salt pans are cornerstones of this contemporary facility's activities.
